Two EMS providers are credited with saving the life of a two-month-old girl who was ejected during an auto accident last night.
It happened around 9 pm at New Jersey Ave. and M St., NW. According to police, a woman was breast-feeding her child as her husband drove through the intersection. Their car was then struck by another auto, which caused the baby to be ejected out onto the street.
Sgt. Lucy Jones and Ferrell Ware on Medic 6 happened to be returning from an assignment and came upon the accident. Sgt. Jones immediately requested a full MVA assignment as Ware leaped from the ambulance to tend to the infant.
The baby was stabilized and immediately transported to Children’s Hospital with critical injuries. Firefighters from Engines 6 and 2 and Rescue Squad 1 responded to the scene to tend to four other victims. Ambulances 2, 10, 12 & 8 transported all the remaining victims to local hospitals with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. The infant was last reported in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. Clearly, the almost immediate response and fast transport played a critical role in saving the baby’s life.
“This is more than just being in the right place at the right time,” said Interim Fire/EMS Chief Adrian Thompson. “This demonstrates the level of competence of our EMS providers and their ability to respond quickly in emergency situations."
