May 19 - 25 is National Emergency Medical Services Week in the District

District’s EMS professionals recognized for their efforts; free health screenings, CPR courses will be offered to general public

National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week is being observed in the District of Columbia. EMS Week (May 19 to May 25) is designed to recognize Call
Takers, Dispatchers, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Emergency Physicians, Educators and Administrators for the work they do in saving lives and providing critical support to emergency medicine. EMS Week is sponsored each year by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

The District’s Fire and EMS Department has planned a beneficial schedule of events in observance of National EMS Week. This year’s theme is “One Mission, One Team.” The week will highlight the commitment EMS personnel make in the community. Each day during this week, the Department will host education and awareness activities that are designed to help keep the citizens of the District safe and healthy.

The official EMS Week Opening Ceremony and Awards Presentation took place at 10 am today, Monday, May 20 at The Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) on 1901 Mississippi Avenue, SE.

The keynote speaker was noted pediatric medicine advocate, Dr. Joseph L. Wright, Senior Vice President of the Child Health Advocacy Institute at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. In addition, Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth B. Ellerbe and his senior management team recognized more than 50 Fire and EMS professionals for their outstanding efforts throughout the year.

8 -9:15 am - Free blood pressure screenings at the Navy Yard Metro Station
8 -10 am – Blood pressure screenings at Fire and EMS Headquarters, 1923 Vermont Ave, NW

Wednesday, May 22, 2013
9 -9:15 am – Free blood pressure screenings at the Tenley Town Metro Station
9 am -1 pm – Emergency Medical Services for Children Day observance at the Children’s National Medical Center, 111 Michigan Ave, NW
2 -6 pm – Kids Safety Day/Free bike helmet give-away at Engine 30, 50 49th St., NE

Thursday, May 23, 2013
8 -9:15 am - Free blood pressure screenings at the Eastern Market Metro Station
10 am -2 pm – Free health screenings and blood pressure/ glucose testing for the general public at 1616 Marion St, NW
2 -7 pm – Free Child Safety Seat Installations at the MPD Traffic Division, 501 NY Ave, NW
