Man Saved From Burning Auto

Wednesday, May 22, 2002

Four people were taken to local hospitals tonight after a fiery crash in Southeast. One man was pulled from the burning wreckage as firefighters and EMS providers tended to the victims.

Just before 9 pm, units responded for a car accident at 28th St. and Texas Ave., SE. The older model Cadillac had gone off the roadway into heavy woods, hit several trees and burst into flames.

When firefighters arrived, two female occupants had gotten themselves out, one man had been ejected, and another was still trapped inside the burning car. Firefighter Robert Brunson, who had pulled hose line into the woods, used the nozzle to break out the rear window, get inside, and pull the man to safety.

"I've never saved anyone before," said Brunson, 38, of Southeast DC. "It felt really good to be able to help someone like this."

A 28-year-old man appeared to be the most seriously injured with a dislocated hip. All the other victims had injuries that did not appear life threatening.
