DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to two northwest Washington fires that required second alarms. No injuries resulted from either fire
At about 8:13 last night, firefighters responded to the scene of a fire that began in the duct work of a stove in the kitchen of the Alamo Grill of Georgetown restaurant at 1063 31st Street, NW. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the fire had spread to the second floor and activated a second alarm. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes. Patrons and workers in the restaurant had been evacuated prior to firefighters' arrival. Damage is estimated at $75,000. The fire, which was determined accidental, was caused by grease buildup in the stove's duct work.
At 9:45 pm, units responded to a home in the Spring Valley area of Northwest where they encountered heavy smoke conditions surrounding the home and fire shooting from the roof. The incident commander issued a working fire dispatch and a second alarm. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was an electrical short in the attic. The official damage estimate has not been determined. A preliminary investigation indicates the cause may have been an electrical malfunction in the attic area.
