Arrest Made in Early Morning Arson

Tuesday, February 26, 2002

DC Fire Investigators have arrested the granddaughter of a woman whose home burned early today in Northeast Washington. The 72-year-old woman was able to escape her burning rowhouse unhurt, thanks to the quick actions of her neighbor, who kicked in a door and got inside to get the woman to safety.

Under arrest and charged with arson is 30-year-old Freddie Crayton of no fixed address. She was officially charged this afternoon.

Fire/EMS units were dispatched to 1300 W St., NE about 7:15 a.m. for a report of a house fire. In fact, two separate fires were blazing, one on the back porch, the other in a trash can under a tree in the back yard.

Through a series of interviews with witnesses, fire investigators were able to bring arson charges against Crayton, who was arrested at the scene.

The arrest was a cooperative effort between members of the DC Arson Task Force, comprised of investigatory elements from DC Fire/EMS, Metropolitan Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. DC Fire Investigators Wesley Hamilton, Mark Davis, Greg Boyer, and John Curry gathered the necessary information to make the arrest. Instrumental in the process was officer Kathy Hassel of the MPD. Damage to the rowhouse has been estimated at $30,000.
