A mid-day fire in the 900 block of Quincy St., NW consumed a rowhouse and caused considerable damage to adjoining homes.
Units were dispatched around 11:20 a.m. for a house fire at 935 Quincy St. First arriving firefighters reported heavy fire on the first and second floors. A heavy interior attack was begun, and despite access problems to the basement and rear, the bulk of the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes.
"Firefighters hit this fire hard, and that kept damage and injuries to a minimum here," said Deputy Fire Chief William Fitzgerald.
Fire investigators have ruled the blaze accidental. It was the result of an electrical malfunction. Damage estimates are placed at $80,000.
"The heat was a big factor in fighting this fire," said Battalion Fire Chief Wayne Benson. "One firefighter was transported to the hospital for mild heat exhaustion."
Firefighter Jerome Draper from Engine 24 was treated at the Washington Hospital Center and released. Paramedics treated a woman on the scene for smoke inhalation. She was not transported to the hospital.
