Quick Knockdown Keeps Fire Damage To A Minimum in SE Blaze

Thursday, May 23, 2002

A raging fire in a Southeast apartment building was kept under control, thanks to the fast response of firefighters.

Neighbors praised the fast action by firefighters from Engines 32 and 19 and Truck 16 for confining the fire to a ground floor bedroom and keeping it from consuming more of the two-story complex.

Firefighters on Engine 32 arrived within three minutes to find heavy fire showing from the first floor of 2807 Erie St., SE. People were in various stages of exiting the building, and firefighters moved to extinguish the fire while helping residents to safety. Engine 19 arrived, and firefighters took their positions behind the building, while Truck 16 positioned in the front and began helping residents exit.

"Everything fell into place perfectly here," said Deputy Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe, commenting on the aggressive attack and resolution of the fire, which began in a front, first floor bedroom.

"This was a textbook example of aggressive, responsible firefighting," said Battalion Chief James Short. "Damage and injuries were minimized, thanks to the fast response."

One person was transported to a local hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A damage estimate was not available.

BFC James Short (near) and DFC Kenneth Ellerbe command the fireground.
