Michael Joseph’s vision of America comes through the lens of his camera. After September 11th, that vision is being documented in a project that’s taken him all over the country, acquiring signatures on a huge banner he hopes will be a lasting testament to the American spirit.
His journey to New York City is also a campaign to garner support for a new postage stamp design, which features the World Trade Center.
During a ceremony at Engine 3, Interim Fire/EMS Chief Adrian Thompson met with Joseph and talked about the project’s significance.
“There have been many projects like this that have come through Washington over the last few months,” said Chief Thompson. “We appreciate and support all of these very emotional displays.”
All of the displays of Joseph’s banner have taken place in firehouses, police stations and other public places. At Engine 3, Chief Thompson was joined by Deputy Mayor Margret Kellems, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, and Tennessee Congressman Zach Wamp in signing the “We the People” banner.
At the end of the campaign, the banner will be donated to the Smithsonian Museum for display.
