First Alert Donates Smoke Alarms to DC Fire & EMS

Tuesday, October 5, 2004

(Washington, DC) – First Alert, in conjunction with the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI), and Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD), will donate thousands of dollars worth of smoke alarms to the District of Columbia Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department during an event at 10:15 am on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the quarters of Engine 3, 439 New Jersey Avenue, NW. These smoke alarms will be given free of charge to DC homeowners as part of our ongoing Smoke Alarm Give Away Program.

Smoke alarms are the most important fire safety item you can have in your home.  The DC Fire & EMS Department encourages everyone to install smoke alarms and to remember to change the batteries every six months.  An installed working smoke alarm doubles a family’s chances of surviving a fire in the home.

“We are grateful to First Alert and CFSI for their generous donation and commitment to fire safety and the fire service, especially during National Fire Prevention Week.  These smoke alarms will help us meet our mission to save lives and protect property in the District of Columbia,” says Fire/EMS Chief Adrian H. Thompson.

“With this donation, First Alert and CFSI are helping families practice two simple life saving lessons: install smoke alarms and test them regularly,” said Congressman Steny Hoyer.  “As a chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus I devote a great deal of time and energy to ensuring that our firefighters have the proper training and equipment so that they may perform their job safely.”

“First Alert has been a major supporter of CFSI since it was established in 1989.  Together, we have donated thousands of smoke alarms to communities throughout the US and are pleased to make this donation to the DC Fire & EMS Department,” says Mark Colello, senior vice president and general manager of First Alert, a division of Sunbeam Products, Inc.
