Fire Chief Completes National Professional Designation Process

Saturday, March 9, 2002

Battalion Fire Chief Stephen M. Reid, PhD, CFO, MIFireE, of the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department successfully completed the process that awards him the designation "Chief Fire Officer." The Commission on Chief Fire Officer Designation (CFOD) met on February 25, 2002, to officially confer the designation upon Chief Reid. He is among the first fifty-eight candidates to receive this designation.

The Chief Fire Officer Designation Program is a voluntary initiative designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate excellence in seven components including: Experience, Education, Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Association Membership, Community Involvement, and Technical Competencies.

To achieve a passing score for the "CFO" designation, individuals must assemble a personal and professional portfolio illustrating the degree of attainment in each component. Each component is graded separately and the candidate must achieve a minimum score in each. A Board of Reviewers consisting of members of the fire and emergency services profession, academia, and municipal agencies score each candidate's portfolio.

Chief Reid has been a member of the fire service for 35 years and a member of the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department for 25 years.
