30th Annual Blessing of the Fleet – To Feature DC Fireboat

Thursday, May 12, 2005

(Washington, DC) The John Glenn, spouting water 70 feet into the air, will lead a parade of vessels in a procession celebrating the 30th Annual Blessing of the Fleet in the Washington Channel. The event is expected to draw 100 boats to participate in the yearly tradition.

Tracing the tradition to ancient Greek and Norse practices, when the gods were summoned to watch over the fishing fleet, the more modern tradition focuses more on the social than the sectarian. Many boats sport creative decorations in a flotilla that lasts for hours.

The Springbrook High School Naval Junior ROTC Color Guard will present the colors to open the event, which is sponsored by the Washington Waterfront Association and the Potomac River Yacht Clubs Association and is coordinated by the Port of Washington Yacht Club.

Motorists are encouraged to line East Potomac Park and Hains Point to get a beautiful view of the event.
