Truck 15 Makes Two Dramatic Rescues

Monday, August 5, 2002

Firefighters from Truck 15-3 rescued two women this afternoon from an apartment fire in the 1300 block of Bryant St., NE.

Units were dispatched to 1384 Bryant St. for heavy smoke coming from the building. Engine 26 went on the scene with heavy fire showing from the balcony area of a second story apartment. Truck 15 reported at least two individuals were standing on their balconies, unable to exit the building because of heavy smoke conditions.

Truck driver John Adams threw a 24-foot ladder to the second floor and a 30-foot ladder to the third floor in the rear of the building. Firefighters Stanley Hicks and Michael Lancaster ascended the ladders and took two women, ages 22 and 31, down to safety. There were no injuries reported.

“Engine 26 got a fast hit on this fire, and that kept it from spreading to other units,” said Battalion Fire Chief David Zollars, the incident commander.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate is yet available.
