DC Fire and EMS is currently hiring the following position:

1) Firefighter/Paramedic
Closing Date: June 1, 2024

This position is in the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS). DC Fire and EMS provides fire suppression, technical rescue, fire prevention, education, community risk-reduction, and pre-hospital care and transportation services to the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia. The Department strives to protect life and property.

Firefighter Paramedics will work in a fast-paced, innovative, and data driven jurisdiction with unique and high-profile special events related to its status as the Nation’s Capital.

Firefighter Paramedics will gain tremendous experience while supporting the core mission of the Department and also have the opportunity to apply for positions that focus on unique specialties.

Firefighter Paramedics are assigned to one of thirty-three fire houses throughout the District of Columbia.

The incumbent will travel primarily by fire suppression unit and medic unit in a prompt and efficient manner in response to calls for emergency incidents. Emergency incidents may include structure fires, emergency medical care of critically ill or injured patients, technical rescues, etc.

2) Fire Cadet
Closing Date: April 30, 2024


The Fire Cadet is assigned to the DC Fire and EMS Training Academy and will complete the full complement of firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training within a one-year period under the direction of the Training Academy. Fire Cadets may be responsible for assisting at special events, including fire prevention and safety activities that fall within their duty hours.
 

3) Supervisory Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator (Performance Improvement Officer)
Closing Date: May 4, 2024

Person hired will supervise Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Leaders who are engaged in monitoring the progress of repairs and preventative maintenance, in addition to inspecting completed scheduled and unscheduled maintenance/repairs for quality and completion. This includes all the heavy-duty mobile firefighting equipment, ambulances, trucks, automobiles, and vehicle equipment for the FEMS’s fleet.

Person hired will collaborate with management and non-management to assess training needs to develop goals and objectives for operation-specific areas.

Person hired will engage in problem solving with management to address employee’s skills and abilities through training.

Person hired will maintain records through the fleet Fire Management Information System (FMIS), provides reports and reviews data on shop floor efficiency. Recommends new methods and procedures as developed by the auto and heavy-duty industries. Ensures that during inspection of quality and completion of repairs the appropriate parts are utilized for repair as outlined by management of the Apparatus Division. Implements improvement of operational performance by identifying, correcting, and reducing comeback or repetitive repairs. Implements improvement of operational performance by reducing the technician labor hours directed to each repair trough education and enhancement of mechanics skills and abilities.
 

4) IT Specialist (Customer Support)
Closing Date: April 17, 2024

This position is located in the District of Columbia's Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department's (FEMS) Information Technology Division (IT), reporting to the Deputy Director of the Technology Division and/or Deputy Chief Information Office (CIO). The incumbent is responsible for the technical and analytical support of existing and new information technology programs, initiatives, and projects as they relate to FEMS.
 

5) Compliance Review Officer
Closing Date: April 29,2024

This position is located within the District of Columbia Government (District), Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department (FEMS), Services Bureau.

The incumbent serves as a key advisor to the Assistant Fire Chief of the Services Bureau (AFCSB).

Incumbent provides guidance and recommendations to the AFCSB regarding compliance issues associated with the administration and is responsible for monitoring the operational programs and activities to ensure compliance with applicable statutes,regulations, and internal policies and procedures; identifies issues, proposing actions, and facilitating cooperation that will improve public safety for District of Columbia residents and visitors.

WHAT IS *NEW* ABOUT THE ENTRANCE EXAM FOR FIREFIGHTER/EMT:

On July 18, 2023, the application period for Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) opens and will close on July 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm. Once you apply, you can choose to take the exam in person or virtually!

  • The virtual option to test is an exciting first for our department! The District of Columbia has partnered with National Testing Network to develop and proctor the exam. With this new partnership, we are switching from one mass exam every few years to ongoing, more frequent testing with shorter waits in between application periods.
     
  • There is a $55.00 fee to take the Firefighter/EMT entrance exam, as well as a $23.00 fee to take an optional practice exam. If you are a resident of the District of the Columbia and can provide a DC driver’s license, these fees are waived.

At time of application, please be ready to upload the following documents:

  1. Birth Certificate or Valid U.S. Passport. You must be a United States Citizen and show that you have reached the age of 19 years old at the time of application.
  2. Valid Driver’s License.
  3. A copy of your High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
