Newly Hired Firefighter/Paramedics Thanks to a SAFER Grant

34 new Firefighter Paramedics started training in mid-May at the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Training Academy

(Washington, D.C) – The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS) Department recently welcomed a recruit class of 34 firefighter/paramedics. The graduates will be ready to serve the Nation’s Capital in August. 

DCFEMS was able to hire the new Firefighter Paramedics Recruit Class 375 thanks to the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant that was awarded to department in August 2015 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).   The new Recruit Class will go through 12 weeks of training at the DC Fire and EMS Training Academy.

The new recruits will bring a great asset to DCFEMS for the improvements of Emergency Medical Service quality of care.

The department applied for and received a 2015 SAFER grant in the amount of $5,674,830.00 that will pay the new hire’s salary for two years.  SAFER grants are awarded to fire departments at the national, state, local level.
