(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS) celebrated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week with a kick-off event recognizing more than 100 current members who have provided 25 years of continuous service as a certified EMS provider in the District of Columbia.

“As the need for pre-hospital care in the District grows, our goal is to find professionals who are committed to service,” said DCFEMS Chief Kenneth B. Ellerbe. “EMS Week is the ideal time to recognize a dedicated group of people who have been able to provide emergency medical care for more than two decades in the District.”

Among those recognized included a number of firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, lieutenants, captains, battalion fire chiefs and deputy fire chiefs.

The ceremony was held today at Hattie Holmes Senior Center, 324 Kennedy St. NW. Special recognition was given to nine current members who provided 30 years of continuous service.

The week-long national celebration, sponsored annually by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), recognizes the work done by emergency medical professionals and began on Sunday, May 18 and runs through Saturday, May 24, 2014. This year’s theme is “Dedicated. For Life.”
