Free Installation and Maintenance Tips Offered to Homeowners

(Washington, DC) – The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS) has declared March will serve as “Smoke Alarm Safety and Installation Month,” an awareness campaign to help residents learn about its free smoke alarm program and tips on smoke alarm maintenance.

“As spring approaches, everyone should check their smoke alarms to make sure that they work properly,” said DCFEMS Chief Kenneth B. Ellerbe. “Our goal is to make sure that every home in DC has a working smoke detector.”

More than 93,000 single family homes in the District are eligible to receive a free smoke detector from the department. Participants must be a current homeowner living in the District of Columbia.

The A’sia Sutton Smoke Alarm Program (ASSAP) is a District-wide initiative established by the Department to ensure that all District of Columbia homes have working smoke alarms. Homeowners can request installation of a free smoke alarm by calling (202) 673-3331 or visiting http://311.dc.gov.
