DC Fire & EMS: Empowering Women to Lead

(Washington, D.C) – DC Fire & EMS Chief Gregory Dean, on Monday, discussed efforts to increase the opportunities for women within the Department, in what has long been a male dominated profession.
 
DC Fire & EMS has established a group within the Department called Empowering Women to Lead (EWTL), which will feature regular networking and educational opportunities for women within the Department. Monday’s program was attended by nearly 100 people inside the National Building Museum.  
 
Chief Dean introduced the mission of Empowering Women to Lead, and spoke of steps he is hopes to climb alongside with EWTL, that would assist women in becoming members of the Department as well as trying to increase the opportunities for advancement and promotions for those women already working for the DC Fire & EMS Department.
 
Notable speakers from FEMS at Monday afternoon’s event were Chief of Staff Amy Mauro, Captain Queen Anunay and Lieutenant Kishia Clemencia. City of Fairfax Battalion Chief Andrea Clark will served as guest speaker. Chief Clark is the first female Battalion Chief and the second female firefighter in the City of Fairfax Fire Department. 
 
Ms. Beverly Perry, who serves as the Senior Advisor to Mayor Muriel Bowser, also spoke and told the audience of her path and the struggles she was forced to overcome as a woman in a male dominated corporate world. She also emphasized the commitment of Mayor Bowser and her administration to the advancement of women in the workplace.
