The D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department encourages drivers to operate their vehicles safely while in the city.

 

When an emergency vehicle responds to an incident it can occasionally encounter heavy traffic. In order to provide a better and faster service during emergencies, please obey the law and move to the right when an emergency vehicle approaches.

 

Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle or apparatus, the driver of every vehicle shall yield to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.

 

By following the law, drivers can help provide a path that lets emergency vehicles arrive faster to someone who needs assistance. Drivers who don’t may face a $150 fine.

 

Drive safely and move to the right when an emergency vehicle approaches.
