2008 Fire/EMS Cadet Program: Minimum Applicant Requirements 
 
Age Requirements
  • Must reach your 18th birthday by October 1, 2008
  • Must not reach your 21st birthday on or before January 31, 2008
Requirements at Time of Application (application period February 4 - 29, 2008)
The order of submission of applications may be considered in the selection process. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible.
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be District of Columbia resident
  • Must have a valid District of Columbia driver’s license or learner’s permit
  • Must have a valid high school diploma or General Education Development diploma (GED)
  • Must submit complete household financial information
  • Must submit required supporting documentation. 
  • If you are male and 18 years of age, must have registered with Selective Service. If you are male and not yet 18 years of age, must register when you reach your 18th birthday.  Must reach your 18th birthday by October 1, 2008.
Department of Employment Services Minimum Requirements After Application Submitted
  • Must take written basic skills assessment test. DOES will contact applicants to schedule the exam.
  • Must meet DOES funding eligibility requirements, possibly including residency in specific District of Columbia census tracts (a limited number of applicants who do not meet DOES income eligibility requirements will be accepted for the Fire/EMS Cadet Program)
DC Fire/EMS Department Minimum Requirements after Application Submitted
  • Must pass a thorough Police/FBI background check
  • Must pass a Department of Motor Vehicles check
  • Must pass a medical examination at the Police and Fire Clinic
  • Must pass a psychological review
