Fire/EMS Emergency Evacuation Plan Guide: Bomb Threat Procedures
Threats Received by Telephone
In the event you are contacted by phone regarding a bomb threat, these steps should be taken:
-
Remain calm, listen, and take notes.
-
Remember what you hear.
-
Keep the caller talking while you notify someone near you that you are on a bomb threat call.
-
Another person should IMMEDIATELY contact building security and then call 911.
-
If the call is received on a telephone with caller ID, record the displayed phone number.
-
Try to get as much information as possible. Ask these questions:
-
Where is the bomb?
-
What does it look like?
-
What building is it in?
-
Why did you choose this building?
-
When is it set to go off?
-
Why would you want to hurt innocent people?
-
Could you repeat the message?
-
Could you tell me the reason you are doing this?
-
Record a description of the caller’s voice:
-
Male or female
-
Juvenile, adult, senior
-
Any type of accent
-
Any speech impediment, such as slurred speech.
-
Manner of speech, such as excited, quiet or calm.
-
Listen for background noises such as railroad, subway, street sounds, aircraft or crowds.
-
Do not discuss the call with anyone but the appropriate authority-in-charge to prevent alarming others.
-
Building security will contact the police department or another agency for necessary assistance regardless of the threat. |
