Fire/EMS Emergency Evacuation Plan Guide: Procedures and Responsibilities

The following may be used as general procedures and responsibilities that apply to all Floor Area Wardens, Assistant Floor Wardens, Zone Monitors, and Assembly Area Monitors:

  • Take immediate charge of all occupants on the floor in all matters pertaining to exit drills.  Be responsible for the enforcement of rules and regulations and report infractions to the management and the Fire/ EMS department.
  • Designate the exit to be used by occupants of the suite or floor area during an alarm and appoint a sufficient number of Assistant Wardens, as necessary.
  • See that evacuation from rooms to exits is orderly, without crowding, and at a uniform speed.  Be especially watchful to prevent stumbling, trampling or other conditions that would impede safe evacuation.
  • Check all offices, conference rooms, storage rooms, restrooms, and other areas to assure complete evacuation of the floor and make sure all doors are closed to prevent fire spread.
  • Appoint a responsible person who will see that all exit doors are promptly opened and kept open until all persons have left the suite or floor area and then close them. That person will then follow in the rear of the exiting occupants to provide assistance.
  • Make sure all occupants proceed to assigned areas outside and away from the building as directed.  Have a designated gathering place to aid in accountability of employees and to ensure that no one is left in the building.
