Firefighter/EMT and Paramedic/Firefighter recruits complete an intensive 20-week training program at the DC Fire/EMS Training Academy. Following graduation from the Training Academy, recruits become Probationary Firefighter/EMTs or Probationary Paramedic/Firefighters for a period that ends one year from the start of their recruit training.
Training includes practical firefighting skills, Emergency Medical Technician certification, and introductions to fire investigation and hazardous materials response. All recruits cross-train in both firefighting and emergency medical service and will serve as first responders to fire and medical calls.
Recruits who enter the Training Academy as certified Paramedics, EMT-Intermediates or EMTs receive reciprocity training in District of Columbia pre-hospital protocols.
