Fire/EMS Emergency Evacuation Plan Guide: Emergency Assistance Techniques for Persons with Mobility Impairments
Rules to Follow When Assisting Persons with Mobility Impairments
If you are assisting an individual who uses crutches or a cane, remember that this person may still be able to evacuate using the stairs, but move more slowly than others who are evacuating. Descend the stairs behind that individual, using your body as a buffer from the other persons descending the stairs, while the mobility-impaired person descends the stairs ahead of you.
Remember that most wheelchair users are trained to transfer from one chair to another (wheelchair to stairchair) depending on their upper body strength. If they are able to, allow them to do so. If not, assist them without causing unnecessary injury.
Carry Techniques
One Person Cradle Lift
- The carrier takes a position on either side of the person to be lifted.
- With knees and back bent, the carrier places arm closest to the person’s legs under both legs at the point where the knees are bent, grasping far leg with hand
- The carrier places free arm across the middle of the back of the person to be lifted.
- The person being lifted places their arm that is closest to the lifter around the carrier’s shoulders.
- Holding the person securely, the carrier uses their legs and gently begins to raise the person by standing upright.
