The FOIA Officer is the principal contact point within DCFD for advice and policy guidance on matters pertaining to the administration of the FOIA. All requests are handled professionally and expeditiously.
FOIA requests may be oral or in writing. If the request is written, the envelope shall prominently be marked "FOIA Request." The FOIA Officer may request that an oral request be reduced to writing, if the requested records are not customarily made available by the public body.
The public policy of the District of Columbia is that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and employees. To that end, provisions of this subchapter shall be construed with the view toward expansion of public access and the minimization of costs and time delays to persons requesting information.
The DC Fire and EMS Department has the responsibility to search for records that are responsive to a request. The agency must then make copies of all responsive records available, unless the records are protected from statutory disclosure. Persons who wish to request agency records under FOIA have a responsibility to reasonably describe the records they seek.
